The Sustainable Future of Mountain Forests in Europe

Third International Workshop
Igls, Tyrol, Austria, 3-5 May 2000

In Austria, high priority is given to mountain forest management. Stable and vital forests are of crucial importance for safeguarding settlement areas and the habitat of man in the greater part of our country. We thus have to raise public awareness in this respect making clear that the socio-economic requirements in mountainous areas, especially as regards the mountain forests can only be met through careful sustainable management. In Austria, this is to a great extent guaranteed by mountain farms. Through their economic viability they provide the basis for the conservation of a livable environment fulfilling recreational functions and securing the prosperity of the region.

Therefore, Austria's Agriculture and Forest Policy has been oriented for decades towards the maintenance of efficient mountain farms, especially in the course of regional projects regarding the conservation of the multifunctionality of mountainous areas.

Consequently, it is of utmost importance to promote the development of sustainable mountain forest management laid down in the Strasbourg Resolu-tion S4 and supported by numerous European countries.

At the 1998 Pan-European Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forests in Europe, held in Lisbon, the Observatoire Européen de la Forêt de Montagne at Saint Jean d'Arvey, France, was commissioned to develop an adequate European implementation strategy.

Austria is pleased to host the 3 rd International Workshop in Igls/Tyrol in May 2000, and thus encourages action for detailed implementation steps in mountain forest policy.

May I express my best wishes for a successful mountain forest meeting 2000 at Igls hoping that it will give fresh impetus for continued European action plan for mountain forest management.
