The Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW) is a multidisciplinary research and training institution under public law of the Federal Government of Austria. BFW supports the economically, ecologically and socially sustainable development of society through the preparation of scientific guidelines and through dissemination of knowledge for the multifunctional use of natural resources.
BFW is an information, coordination and service centre of the Federal Government of Austria, providing a range of research and training solutions in the fields of forests, natural hazards and landscape.
Research concentrates on
- sustainable multifunctional use, management and protection of forest ecosystems and catchment areas for drinking water supply
- long-term changes in ecosystems and biodiversity conservation and enhancement
- protection against natural hazards and geo-risk management.
The mission of BFW is laid down in the provisions of the BFW Act (part of the Agricultural Law Changes Act of 2004) and the Austrian Forest Act (Federal Law Gazette No. 83/2004).
