Feeding damage by larvae above the stem base; caterpillar producing oval tunnels about 1,5cm in diameter, which broaden to several cm towards the end of the feeding period; shavings and feces are expelled; sapflow around the emerging places; Butterfly grey brown, wingspan up to 10cm, very plump; characteristic flesh-red caterpillars can reach 10cm in length and 1cm in width, very voracious, smelling intensily like pyroligneous acid; generation three years
