Clearwing moths, White-barred Clearwing and other species - Sesia sp. | deutsch

Symptoms    Feeding damage by larvae in the lowest part of the stem, particularly on young trees (between two and 5cm diameter), at first roundish underneath the bark, later cave-like widening in the wood; from there tunnels extend upwards, which are ca. 10cm in length; sausage-shaped feces are produced; the larger species (Sesia apiformis) can attack also old trees; pupation in the tunnels or outside in a cocoon
Impact    Young plants die; young trees: increased danger of breakage; entrance of wood destroying fungi
Control    Removal of infested plants before the flight period of the butterflies; diagnosis (feces or pupae showing in the emerging holes (White-barred Clearwing) difficult
Hosts   Birch; Oak; Alder; Poplar; Fir; Willow;
