Blue pine buprestid - Phaenops cyanea | deutsch

Symptoms    Lower stem parts with larval tunnels in the phloem, initially thin and flat; in early stages more on the south face of the tree; tunnels later on zigzag-shaped and filled with characteristic shavings; around the tunnels bark tissues brownish discolored; later, these areas unite to form broad brown stripes. At this time, the wood below is mostly blue stained and the crown shows massive signs of decline. Beetles are flat, reach 10mm in size and blue to blueish green. The larvae are shaped like wooden spoons and 2cm in length.
Impact    The blue pine buprestid is involved in the complex of pine decline in a very early stage (often the first insect). The symptom development usually is terminated by the death of the tree.
Control    Curative measures impossible. To avoid a propagation of the beetle, attacked trees should be removed in spring before the beetles hatch and the bark has to be removed and taken out of the stand.
