Needle-shortening pine gall midge - Thecodiplosis brachyntera | deutsch

Symptoms    Feeding by larvae in the sheath of young needles in May leads to shortened and distorted needles, which soon turn yellow and drop in winter. In the sheath development of a gall, within the gall an orange-red larva of 1-2mm in size.
Impact    Midges swarm in May, egg deposition on needles in May; larvae enter the needle base; hibernation outside the needle in a cocoon; may cause loss of needles or act as a vector for dieback-fungi; possibilities of errors: other gall midges on pine needles.
Control    Nearly non necessary
