Symptoms | Very fine whitish to silver-grey mottling, mostly dispersed over the whole leaf; upper surface sometimes nearly white; symptoms restricted to the upper leaf side; sucking damage is caused by various species of leafhoppers, which suck on the lower leaf surface; the phenomenon can be mistaken for damage by ozone.
Impact | These symptoms can be observed on leaves of numerous tree species in summer, they are most common on leaves of maples, but also on beech, horse chestnut and others. On the leaves, the damage doesn't cause any lasting problems; sucking on other plant tissues, however, can cause severe damage (see Green leafhopper on bark).
