Large-scale yellow brown or reddish brown spots on leaves, which are easily recognized as mines; they are produced by the larvae of the Plane mining moth and develop on the lower leaf surface. They can be mistaken especially for plane anthracnose, which often occurs together with the moth. For a safe diagnosis, a leaf should be held against the light, and the mines can be seen easily. By use of a hand lens also the dark feces within the mine are showing. After hatching, the outer layers break off and the mined tissues become free.
