Symptoms
| |
Initially wilt of leaves (rolling) on single branches, later on death of twigs and branches. Finally the tree dies; wood in cross section with dark, dot- and ring-shaped staining in the springwood. In addition feeding damage of bark beetles on branches and the stem.
|
Impact
| |
Rather new species of Dutch elm disease, which had replaced the „old“ species O.ulmi more or less totally; highly pathogenic; plugging of vessels and intoxication of the tree by wilt-toxins, very widespread in Austria.
|
Control
| |
Curative measures only for single trees worth being maintained: hygienic measures – removing of infected twigs at early stages of infection, stem injections with systemic fungicides (see federal register of plant protection).
