Frost (spring frost) | deutsch

Symptoms    Conifers: firs ans spruces: shoots in May suddenly reddish-brown, shoots pending, dropped during summer; possibilities of errors: Botrytis cinerea. Larches: shoots in May yellow to brown; short shoots and long shoots with bundles of brown needles; death of long shoots commonly starts at their base, which is slightly swollen or cracks open (resembling a wound). Broadleaved trees: depending on the severity of the frost sudden drying of young leaves on the tree (sometimes blackish discoloration) up to death of branches and the stem, following deep cracks in the bark (mostly on the south face of the stem). Possibilities of errors: various fungal diseases (wilt)
Impact    Spring frost at the time of flushing causes damage to trees in Austria nearly every year (mostly only slight damage). Conifers rarely are attacked by secondary invaders, broadleaved trees are mostly weakened more severily, so secondary agents often attack and kill them.
Control    No curative control possible; preventive measures: several methods to protect trees from frost damage (selection of sheltered sites for planting, various protection coatings or tree paints on the stem of single trees).
Hosts   All tree species;
Affected plant parts    Leaf; Needle; Shoot/Twig/Branch; Shoot/Twig/Branch; Stem;
