Swedish pine cast - Lophodermella sulcigena | deutsch

Symptoms    Current years needles in the second half of the season violet-brown or grey-brown: discoloration limited to the outer (distal) half of the needle; proximal needle half remaining green for a long time; many needles affected, therefore often mistaken for spring frost damage; in the subsequent year needles turn pale grey; development of fruiting bodies (hysterothecia - thin, unsharply bordered grey to black lines), needle cast; the disease can be mistaken for Lecanosticta-needle cast.
Impact    This needle disease is widespread but locally occurring in the Alps, affecting mainly Pinus mugo, Pinus uncinata and Pinus sylvestris; predominantly in elevations above 1000m a.s.l.; epidemics following cool and wet summers; damage negligible, sometimes thinning and loss in increment or branching anomalies following repeated infection by Lophodermella
Control    In natural stands measures not necessary; in afforestations at most removal of heavily infested plants; in areas with repeated infestations replanting with resistent plant stock
