The Federal Forest Office was established under the BFW-Act 2005. It is responsible for  the implementation of the Plant Protection Act 2011, the Act of Forest Reproductive Material 2003 and the EU Timber Regulation 2010 (EUTR) as well as the Council Regulation 2005 and the Commission Regulation 2008 for FLEGT. The Austrian Act of Timber Trade Control 2013 includes EUTR and FLEGT.

The Federal Forest Office belongs to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management and employs mainly special trained personnel of the Federal Forest Research Centre (BFW).

The Federal Forest Office works closely with other Austrian and international authorities and institutions; it is the “Competent Authority” (CA) or “Official Body” for the EU Commission and the Member States. For the OECD Forest Seed and Plant Scheme, the office is the “National Designated Authority” (NDA).
