The aim of genetic conservation, in addition to enhancing biodiversity , is to maintain the genetic diversity of tree species and shrub populations in order to be able to successfully react to biotic and abiotic stress factors in the long run. The preservation and sustainable management of forest genetic resources is therefore of utmost priority. The overall goals are to maintain the location adaptation of indigenous forest tree populations developed as a result of migration and natural selection (preservation of adaptation) and to preserve the ability of these populations to adapt themselves permanently to environmental changes (preservation of adaptability).

Priority Areas of Work

  • Gene reserves (in situ)
  • Seed orchards (ex situ)
  • Conservation genetics (e.g. reproduction monitoring, minimum population size)

Tasks and Activities

  • Austria-wide assessment and mapping of indigenous, well adapted or rare tree and shrub species
  • Scientific management of gene reserves, forest regeneration assessment
  • Management of forest seed orchards, including tending, monitoring of flowering status of plants and seed harvesting
  • Austria-wide assessment of the flowering and pollination behaviour as well as the seed production of forest tree species as an important information for research, forest owners and seed traders
  • Provision of forest planting stocks for BFW research projects
  • Production and sale of forest productive material for niche products (rare tree species, specific provenances), that are related to genetic conservation and tree improvement (protection through utilisation).
