 | Characteristic resin-funnel at the base of the stem (partly violet stain, mixture of bore shavings and resin – frass); needle discoloration of the whole crown; eggs are deposited at the stem base or on superficial strong roots; hibernation in every stage of development possible; roundish tunnels below the bark with dense layers of bore shavings (feces and shavings); largest bark beetle of central Europe (7-9mm in size), dark brown, without any teeth on the hind end; larva light beige to white, without legs.

 | attacks mostly trees, which had been mechanically damaged on the stem; younger trees may die, older trees may suffer severly from loss in increment and vitality; prefers spruces 20-40 years old.
Curative measures Removal of attacked trees from the stand; watch for infested strong roots!
