 | | Needles turn yellow or red-brown. In the needle black fruiting bodies, sized about 0,5mm develop. These fruiting bodies emerge only with their upper part resembling small pustules. A flat cut into these pustules shows, that the fruiting bodies are much larger inside the needle and that they consist of several „chambers“ (hand lens!). The same type of fruiting body can be found in the bark of dying or dead shoots and twigs.

| Cytospora species are the most common fruiting bodies producing microfungi on dead branches and twigs of firs in the litter. Furthermore, they appear on needles of firs and on twigs, which have been killed by hail wounds or by frost (common on larches!)
